A group of exceptional BC student-athletes have been volunteering at a Heading Home shelter through Friends of the Heights. Student-athletes from multiple BC sports teams prepare meals and spend time with the kids in our programs, who especially loved coloring and playing basketball with the college students. Friends of the Heights volunteers went above and beyond by returning to the shelter with all-new balls and sports gear for the kids.
Tom Devitt, the General Manager of Friends of the Heights, said, “Often when we attempt to serve others, we don’t anticipate the impact this service has on us. That is never more accurate than when we visit the outstanding residents of Heading Home! Their spirit and zest for life is contagious. We think we are helping them, and all the while, they are the ones bringing such joy to our day!”
Studies have shown that Gen Z might become one of the most charitable generations yet, and the student-athletes from BC have exemplified this philanthropic trend. “Heading Home moved 150 Boston area families out of homelessness last year and will support hundreds more in the months ahead to do the same thing. I’m proud to partner up with them,” said Cutter Gauthier of the Boston College Men’s Ice Hockey team. Pat Garwo, from the Boston College Football team, said, “The families from Heading Home are made up of amazing people. I especially enjoy engaging with the kids there. Because of Heading Home, their future is very bright!”
Thank you so much to Friends of the Heights and the BC student-athletes for putting a smile on our clients’ faces! With the help of partners like Friends of the Heights, we can bring joy to over 2,000 clients annually on their journeys out of homelessness.

About Friends of the Heights:
Friends of the Heights (FOTH) is a fan-driven and alumni-led Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) collective supporting Boston College student-athletes. In partnership with the BPS Foundation, a 501 c3 nonprofit, FOTH allows student-athletes to support local community organizations, make appearances, and promote charitable causes in the ethos of men and women for others. The charity receives the benefit of the student-athlete’s time and/or use of their image, while supporters earn a tax-deductible benefit for their donation.
